Early Years

Mission statement

The Early Years team at Redhill Primary School recognise that each child is an individual; that all children are creative; that all children need to succeed. We believe learning is maximised when it takes place in an environment enriched with support, encouragement and assistance. We celebrate the pursuit of lifelong learning and are committed to nurturing high self-esteem and respect for others. We believe that everyone can learn, become better thinkers and independent learners by asking questions, solving problems and make thoughtful decisions.

Vision, Philosophy and Aims

In our Early Years we promote quality teaching and learning in a calm, caring and engaging environment where children feel safe and are encouraged to succeed. We aim to give children a good start in their learning journey by providing a curriculum which addresses their educational, cultural, spiritual, moral, physical and social development.

We believe strongly that relationships between all members of our school community are the key to establishing a nurturing environment where all our children are treated fairly and every individual member of our team feels valued.

We also believe that positive attitudes and understanding once fostered, promote good behaviour and manners which enable children to feel respected, encouraged and succeed.

We aspire to build positive relationships with each family, as we know that together we hold the key to unlock their child's learning.

In our Reception we follow The Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum which identifies the Stepping Stones that children will take through seven key areas of learning and development. We support these areas of learning through planning activities and experiences which will support a balance between cross curriculum learning and individual children's natural interests and learning styles.

Three prime areas:

  • Communication and language
  • Physical development
  • Personal, social and emotional development

Four specific areas:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive arts and design

Play, exploration and active learning are paramount in helping your child develop in these areas. We are experienced in assisting young children to make connections in their learning, transform their understanding and encourage them to demonstrate creativity and critical thinking. Children will learn new things in an engaging environment and learn key skills in computer, numeracy, reading and writing alongside an emphasis on health and safety thus preparing them for their lives in the future.
