Here at Redhill Primary Academy we strive to promote and secure British values throughout our ethos and curriculum. This statement demonstrates our commitment to not only promote British Values but, also, to celebrate them.
We recognise the importance of embedding an understanding of valuing everyone’s opinion. Pupils are always listened to by adults and are taught to listen carefully and with concern for each other, respecting the right of every individual to have their opinions and voices heard. The opinions and decisions of the Executive Council, School Council with their elected members, have had a direct impact on our school community. A wide variety of Pupil Voice groups enables our children to have ownership of their community but also to leave a legacy for others. Through the curriculum itself our learners can reflect on the systems of democracy in Britain and around the world both past and present. Scenarios are set up eg a General Election in which all pupils have a right to vote and issues across the world are explored sensitively.
Within in our school the importance of laws; whether they are those that govern the class, the school or the country are consistently reinforced. Our academy ‘Golden Rules’ are embedded across our school life every day. Each class also discusses and sets their own rules that are clearly understood by all and seen to be necessary to ensure that every member in that class is able to learn in a safe and ordered environment. Through assemblies and in class our pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws; that they govern and protect us; the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken. We invite law enforcement agencies to speak in assemblies and visit classes from CSO visit in Nursery to STAR facilitator in Year 6. This enables our children to gain a better understanding of the ways in which they can work within the law’s remit but also how the law can protect them.
Within the academy, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school we educate and provide boundaries for our pupils to make choices safely, through the provision of a safe environment and an empowering education. Our pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedom and are advised how to exercise these safely eg e safety and PSHCE lessons. Whether it is through choice of challenge, with whom to work, how to record or participation in our numerous extra- curricular activities; our pupils are given the freedom to make choices daily.
Respect is one of the core values of Redhill Primary Academy and is demonstrated in our school logo; respecting each other and the environment. We are a caring school where diversity is encouraged and celebrating difference is fundamental. The pupils know and understand that it is expected and imperative that respect is shown to everyone; whatever differences they may have, and must everything; however big or small. This core value of respect in our school underpins our work every day, both in and out of the classroom, during assemblies and special events eg drama workshops to promote Anti-Bullying and E Safety Week.
Our school logo, mission statement and calendar of events reflect our total commitment to the tolerance of and celebration of those who have different faiths and beliefs. Children are encouraged to share their life experiences of their own cultures and ask questions regarding the faiths and beliefs of others through our diverse school community and also more explicit in Assemblies, RE,PSHCE, Celebrations and Festivals eg Divali, partnership with our link school in Makalowle, Kenya etc. Through assemblies, curriculum, and from being part of our diverse school community our pupils gain an understanding of their place in Modern Britain.
